PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Redshirt freshman Pete Rowley (Reading, Pa.) notched a career-best two goals to help the SU men’s soccer team (4-2-1, 0-2-1 BIG EAST) rally from a two-goal deficit versus Providence, but the Friars’ Ryan Maduro scored with 38 seconds left to play to lift the Friars (3-0-4, 1-0-2 BIG EAST) to a 3-2 victory versus the Orange at Glay Field on Friday, Sept. 23.
Rowley is the first SU player to score two goals in match since Brad Peetoom (Abbotsford, British Columbia) achieved the feat against Pittsburgh in the 2004 season finale. They were Rowley’s team-leading fourth and fifth goals of the season. He also leads SU with 10 total points.
The Orange fell behind early in the contest with Maduro giving the Friars a 1-0 advantage on a shot from 24 yards out that found the top left corner of the SU net 7 minutes and 52 seconds into the game. Syracuse dominated play in its offensive end of the field the rest of the first half, earning six corner kicks to Providence’s one, but still trailed 1-0 at the break.
Just over 15 minutes into the second half, the Friars’ leading goal scorer Eoin Lynch put Providence ahead 2-0 with a tally off a scrum in front of the net at 60:03.
Rowley answered Lynch’s score 9 minutes and 17 seconds later, one timing an Andrew Hawtin (Toms River, N.J.) pass into the Providence net at 69:20. With momentum on its side, SU continued its offensive charge and with less than three minutes to play the Orange tallied the equalizer after senior captain Mike McCallion (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) chipped the ball over the Friars’ defense to Rowley, who beat Providence keeper Chris Konopka with a high shot at 87:49.
With the score knotted at 2-2 and less than a minute to play, Providence earned a direct kick in front of the SU net. Derek Nobrega took the kick, but his shot was blocked by the Orange defense. The rebound came to Maduro, who notched his second goal of the day at 89:22 to give the Friars the victory.
Hawtin tallied an assist on Rowley’s first goal. It was the first point of his SU career. McCallion earned an assist on the equalizer, increasing his season assist total to three, which is tied for the team lead with Isaac Collings (Oriskany, N.Y.).
Freshman keeper Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) played all 90 minutes and made four saves for the Orange. Konopka finished with three stops in goal for the Friars.
Syracuse continues its road trip on Sunday, Sept. 25 when it plays at No. 12 Connecticut. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
